Why zebras don't get ulcers

My husband Steve introduced me to this phenomenal lecture by professor/author/speaker Dr. Robert Sapolsky. I’ve been thinking about it all week.

The lecture is about how stress affects our health.

Here’s some fascinating stats. In 1900, the life expectancy for a person in the US was 48 years old with the most common causes of death being influenza, tuberculosis and pneumonia. Now, the average life expectancy for a person in the US is 78 years old, mostly due to better living conditions and medical progress.

What is interesting is that the older we get, the most common causes of death change. Now, the two most common causes of death in the US are heart disease and cancer.

And we know why. We know that chronic low level stress over long periods of time makes us sick. It doesn’t give us cancer but it damages our heart and our immunity. Over time, it kills us.

I've been thinking about the leap we made from 1900 to 2022 in life expectancy and what may be possible in the next 100 years.

What if we could live happy and healthy lives until 125? What if the key to this is transforming our stress responses?

This is what science is showing us. With advances in science and medical technology combined with our continued transformation of our consciousness; I believe this is possible. I believe this is possible for us now. Not in 100 years.

Now.

I’ll leave the science to Dr. Sapolsky. My passion is the transformation of our consciousness.

Because that is the crucial step for all of us.

Where do we begin. First, let’s look at stress. What are our stressors?

Everything. 😳😳😳😳😳

Admittedly, the list is long. We are worried about pandemics, global warming, societal injustice, racism and poverty…

How about our daily lives?  We are worried about money (having it, not having it, spending it, saving it, owing it), our jobs and our contribution to the world, our families and our children, our daily grind and getting it all done….

Stress for us in 2022 is a psychological experience. We aren’t a zebra being chased by a lion. When a zebra is being chased by a lion, physiological processes happen that help that lion survive. The sympathetic aspect of their nervous systems go online and they are in fight or flight. They either run and get away or die. That is it. End of story.

The zebra does not worry about the lion when the lion is not in sight. The zebra is not thinking about how the lion may kill him tomorrow. The zebra is not worrying about it’s zebra family getting chased and eaten by lions at some time in the future. And that is why they don’t have stress ulcers.

They aren’t thinking about it.

So why don’t we all just be like zebras and stop thinking so much?

Well isn’t that the freaking 64,000 question?

The most obvious answer is that we aren’t zebras. We have these beautiful brains that create these egoic structures that help us learn the world around us. The aspect of our minds that keeps us safe and structured. I call this the Ego.

We also have this light of expanded awareness within us that shines so brightly and is the source of all our inspiration and creativity and collective societal expansion. I call this the Higher Self, God, Spirit, Source.

Our collective challenge is that we get immersed in the ego and the emotional experience and cannot see our way out. And it is killing us slowly.

The world needs our Highest Selves right now. If we can unravel ourselves from habitual stress responses (I see you overwhelm, anxiety, anger and malaise); we can shine our lights, share our gifts and feel the ultimate sense of alignment, wellness and fulfillment.

And maybe even live long enough to learn the truth behind the UFO phenomena. #personalgoals

Humor is important even though I'm serious about UFOs. 😜

This is the work of our lifetime. It is, as far as I am concerned, our most important work.

Our habitual stress responses are a thick veil that prevents us from experiencing our highest self.

And I want to share something with you.

This is MY deepest work. It is my life’s work.

I invite you to join me as I share the very best of what I have learned, what I am currently learning and the learnings yet to present themselves.

The program is called Transform. I am changing the structure of the course from 3 months to 6 months for maximum support for your transformation. To make it more feasible for those who work 9-5, the group will meet weekly for one hour at 12pm and you and I will have monthly private sessions for a total of 24 group hours and 6 private hours of community and support.

If you are ready to make a change; the opportunity is here for you to take. You will need to make an investment. Emotionally, psychologically and financially. That is the requirement for transformation. You will need to be all in.

Are you ready? What are you waiting for?

The time is now.
